The context
Nike was working internally on a physical product: a multi-sensor you place in your sole to detect the different movements of your shoe. The idea is to use your feet as a controller, to make music, control software, run your smart home and more. Nike came to us to imagine what the app experience could look like, knowing the target audience is teenagers and young adults. We had five weeks to design, build and deliver a prototype.
The approach
With the audience in mind, we took the direction of a fun and playful experience while simplifying what was originally a very technical idea, and this is where the analogy with trading card games comes in. We created three types of card, ‘device’, ‘action’ and ‘result’, and the principle is to combine one of each into what we call a ‘combo’ (e.g. ‘left shoe’ + ‘swing’ = ‘keyboard CMD+Z’). You can create as many combos as you want, each doing something different. For more customisation and depth, you switch to advanced mode and use modifiers and operators in an intuitive node-based canvas. Once happy with your combos, you sync them to the sensors or share them with friends.
We designed, built and delivered the prototype in five weeks. It has been handed over to the Nike team for further user testing and funding.
